Takada von ihrer Mutter auf eine ländliche Schule gebracht, um sie dort für einige Tage unterzubringen, da in der Familie berufliche Veränderungen anstehen, die bewältigt sein wollen. So gelangt das junge Mädchen in eine Zwergschule, in der auch die Tierkinder der näheren Umgebung unterrichtet werden. Nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten, sich an die unkonventionelle Schar zu gewöhnen, gelingt es ihr, Freundschaft mit Koichi, dem einzigen Jungen, zu schließen, als sie auch schon wieder abreisen muss. Kurz zuvor widerfährt ihr jedoch das große Glück, dem legendären Windgott Matasaburou leibhaftig zu begegnen.

»Matsubaro of the Wind« basiert auf der gleichnamigen Kurzgeschichte von Kenji Miyazawa, verlegt die Handlung jedoch in die heutige Zeit und nimmt auch sonst einige Veränderungen vor.
