Synopsis

Ever since his primary school days, Takashi Natsume has been able to see and hear the spirits known as Youkai. Although he is no longer frightened by the youkai in high school, he hides his abilities from almost everyone around him.

When Takashi was still a small child, his parents died, and he was handed around between his remote relatives like a tiresome chore. Now, he has been living with Touko and Shigeru Fujiwara for quite some time, who treat him like their own son and with whom he feels very comfortable. Takashi received the “Book of Friends” from his deceased grandmother Reiko. Every youkai who gave their name to Reiko and had their name recorded in the book had to follow the orders of the book’s owner.

Reiko spent much of her youth forcing youkais to entrust their names to her. Many years ago, Takashi had rather unwittingly freed the youkai Madara from the long-standing ban of a temple. To normal people, Madara looks like a tri-coloured lucky cat called “Nyanko-sensei”, yet he can also transform into a powerful youkai at any time to confront hostile youkais. Madara acts as a protector and advisor for Takashi in return for his services. An innocuous delivery to a village not far away for Takashi’s foster mother leads to an encounter with a woman from Reiko’s past. A chain of events commences, leading to Nyanko splitting into three kittens and the disappearance of classmate Tooru Taki. Although classmate Kaname Tanuma cannot see youkais, he can sense them and thus help a little, but considerably more help is needed here …
