Shadows House (2021)

“Shadows House” is about so-called “Shadows” who live in a huge castle and represent the aristocracy of this world. Their bodies are completely black, which is why they can practically only be distinguished by the magnificent clothes they wear. They also constantly emit soot, especially when they are worried or angry. These shadows are served by “Living Dolls” who look like people and have two roles: on the one hand, they are the servants of the castle and must constantly remove the secreted soot; on the other hand, each shadow has its own puppet that represents its visible face. In this role, these puppets do not show their own feelings but those of their shadow.

At first, five young shadows each receive a new puppet. At this stage, the coupling of feelings is not yet in place, so a test is to decide whether the shadow and puppet are a good match. These examinees include the shadow girl Kate and her doll Emilico. While the other dolls are rather passive and focused on their shadows, Emilico is quite different: she is interested in her environment and also feels sympathy for other dolls, which is why she promptly tries to make friends with them. This is soon noticed by the examiners who do not like to see such things …

»Shadows House« handelt von sogenannten »Schatten«, die in einem riesigen Schloss leben und die Aristokratie dieser Welt darstellen. Ihre Körper sind komplett schwarz, weshalb sie praktisch nur anhand der prachtvollen Kleidung, die sie tragen, zu unterscheiden sind. Außerdem sondern sie ständig Ruß ab, insbesondere wenn sie besorgt oder verärgert sind. Bedient werden diese Schatten von »Lebenden Puppen«, die wie Menschen aussehen und zwei Rollen haben: Einerseits sind sie die Bediensteten des Schlosses und müssen ständig den abgesonderten Ruß entfernen, andererseits hat jeder Schatten seine eigene Puppe, die sein sichtbares Gesicht darstellt; in dieser Rolle zeigen diese Puppen nicht ihre eigenen Gefühle, sondern die ihres Schattens.

Zu Beginn der Handlung erhalten fünf junge Schatten eine jeweils neue Puppe. In diesem Stadium ist die Kopplung der Gefühle noch nicht vorhanden, sodass eine Prüfung entscheiden soll, ob Schatten und Puppe zueinander passen. Zu diesen Prüflingen gehören auch das Schatten-Mädchen Kate und ihre Puppe Emilico. Während die anderen Puppen eher passiv und auf ihre Schatten fokussiert sind, ist Emilico ganz anders: Sie interessiert sich für ihre Umwelt und empfindet auch Sympathie für andere Puppen, weshalb sie prompt versucht, mit ihnen Freundschaft zu schließen. Das fällt auch bald den Prüfern auf, die so etwas gar nicht gerne sehen …

In un enorme castello vivono cosiddette «ombre»che rappresentano l’aristocrazia di questo mondo. I loro corpi sono completamente neri e possono essere riconosciuti quasi solo grazie ai loro sontuosi vestiti. Oltretutto secernano in continuazione cenere, in particolar modo quando sono infastiditi o preoccupati.

Vengono serviti da «bambole viventi» che hanno sembianze umane e svolgono due ruoli: da una parte, sono la servitù del castello e devono continuamente rimuovere la cenere, dall’altra ogni ombra ha la propria bambola che rappresenta il proprio viso. In questo ruolo queste bambole mostrano i sentimenti dell’ombra e non i propri.

All’inizio della trama, cinque giovani ombre ricevono una nuova bambola. In questo stadio l’unione dei sentimenti non è ancora avvenuta, sarà un esame a decidere se ombra e bambola sono compatibili. Quest’esame lo devono fare anche la ragazza ombra Kate e la sua bambola Emiriko.

Mentre le altre bambole sono concentrate in modo piuttosto passivo sulle loro ombre, Emiriko si dimostra diversa. Lei è interessata al mondo che la circonda e sente della simpatia per altre bambole e cerca di fare amicizia con loro. Questo ben presto viene notato anche dagli esaminatori, a cui la cosa non piace per niente – potrà quest’anomalia portare al fallimento dell’esame?
