Insomniacs after School (2023)

Insomnia is a huge problem for the psyche as well as for the mind. This fact is felt by the boy Nakami Ganta every day – or rather every night. Due to his always sleepy-looking eyes, the high school student is not exactly in first place in the popularity ranking of his classmates and is therefore considered an outsider. So it’s no wonder that they don’t want him to be part of the preparations for the upcoming school festival either, which is why he is unceremoniously given a “special assignment”: he is to go to the school observatory and fetch materials for the upcoming event, which are stowed away there. To make matters worse, there is also a rumour the place is apparently crawling with ghosts. However, Nakami is not deterred by this and immediately goes to the supposedly haunted observatory – without any ifs or buts.

To his astonishment, instead of the ghosts he finds a girl named Isaki Magari, who suffers from the same “curse” as he does: a sleeping disorder. Since no one else dares to go to this place because of the rumours about the observatory, the high school student uses it to compensate for her sleepless nights. So it happens that Nakami also uses the observatory as a retreat from now on, and the two of them can get some well-deserved rest there together. But will insomnia be the only thing they have in common, or will the two find their way to each other in a completely different way …?

Schlaflosigkeit ist sowohl für die Psyche als auch für den Geist ein gewaltig großes Problem. Diese Tatsache verspürt der Junge Nakami Ganta tagtäglich – oder besser gesagt jede Nacht – am eigenen Leib. Aufgrund seiner stets verschlafen aussehenden Augen ist der Oberschüler im Beliebtheits-Ranking seiner Klasse nicht gerade an erster Stelle und gilt daher als Außenseiter. Kein Wunder also, dass man ihn auch bei den Vorbereitungen für das anstehende Schulfest nicht dabeihaben will, weshalb er kurzerhand einen »Sonderauftrag« aufgebrummt bekommt: Er soll ins Schulobservatorium gehen und Materialien für die anstehende Veranstaltung holen, die dort angeblich verstaut sind. Zu allem Überfluss soll es dort offenbar nur so von Gespenstern wimmeln. Davon lässt sich Nakami allerdings nicht abschrecken und begibt sich zur angeblich verspukten Sternwarte.

Zu seiner Verwunderung findet er anstelle der Geister ein Mädchen namens Isaki Magari vor, die am selben »Fluch« wie er leidet: nämlich an einer Schlafstörung. Da aufgrund der Gerüchte um das Observatorium sonst niemand an diesen Ort zu gehen wagt, nutzt die Oberschülerin diesen, um ihre schlaflosen Nächte auszugleichen. So kommt es, dass auch Nakami die Warte fortan als Rückzugspunkt verwendet und die beiden von nun an gemeinsam dort zu verdienter Ruhe kommen können. Doch wird die Insomnie ihre einzige Gemeinsamkeit bleiben oder finden die zwei vielleicht noch auf ganz anderem Wege zueinander …?
