Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer (2022)

Hoshi no Samidare / 惑星のさみだれ

Information

Synopsis

Actually, student Yuuhi Amamiya leads a very ordinary life. But then one day, a talking lizard called Sir Noi Crezant comes to him and tells a fantastic story: in Earth’s orbit exists a massive hammer that is about to destroy the planet. Responsible for this is the dreaded Archmage Animus and the only one who can stop him now is Princess Samidare Asahina with her beast knights.

Before Yuuhi really understands what is happening, Crezant gives him the power to transform into a lizard knight and thus take part in the battle. When he is attacked by a golem a little later, he is glad to be able to defend himself, despite all his reservations. But Animus is not the only enemy who wants to destroy the earth. The princess also pursues her own goals, which could end fatally for humanity as Yuuhi soon finds out, which confronts him with a difficult decision.

According to my manga list I completed reading this manga 11 years ago. And gave the lowest possible rating.
I have no recollection of this story whatsoever.

It looks like my cup of tea, though. Ability users fighting or whatever. Sounds good. Let's check this anime out.
Big mistake.

I still have no recollection of what happened in the manga, but if the anime gets it even a little bit close I can tell you why I gave the lowest possible rating: it's the protagonist.

He starts out rejecting this whole fantasy nonsense having little interest in risking his health for whatever nonsense the story made up as motivation. Great. You go boy. The nonsense the story made up is a hammer the size of a planet that is going to smash Earth to pieces. Oh well. Guess that works as motivation.

This isn't where things fall apart, though. This is where the protagonists decide that they won't let some stupid hammer destroy Earth. They are going to smash Earth themselves, because Earth kinda sucks. So far this is all still the first episode or so.

Things fall apart later on when other characters get introduced and the protagonist begins to care for this whole nonsense and takes things seriously. And especially when it turns out that the villain is even more poorly written than the protagonists. His motivations make no sense. The ending makes no sense. It all falls apart ruining something that started out as a fairly unique take on this genre of fighting ability users.

I had the good sense of skipping through this mess, so my rating isn't as bad as the manga, but if I had watched the whole thing I would have taken a lot of mental damage and be forced to give the lowest rating again.
