#1It takes a while to get good.
After 8-12 episodes things are really getting started. There's less focus on cooking the monster of the day and instead we get a real adventure with characters that are easy to grow fond of.
What makes it better than other fantasy stories is that all characters are fleshed out and it's not only the protagonists that show competence in what they do. This in turn makes the place feel real. Conflicts aren't easily resolved by schooling the idiots that are not the protagonists. Everyone has valid points of view, making for a good story.
