Synopsis
In “Gunbuster”, humanity has finally managed to advance their space technology so they can travel beyond the borders of their solar system. However, ominous monsters have also appeared from outer space to wipe out humanity and are gradually approaching planet Earth. To deal with the threat, humans have developed large fighting robots. Among these robots is the giant Gunbuster, which can only be controlled by the best pilots and is possibly the greatest chance to defend humanity against alien beings.
A few years after the first battles, the sometimes clumsy Noriko Takaya is also training to be a pilot. While her father was a famous fleet admiral who disappeared without a trace during the first battles against the aliens, her own talent is more questionable. When it is time for the selection of the next two Gunbuster pilots, the attractive and talented Kazumi Amano is a virtual shoo-in. Noriko is determined to get the other seat, on the one hand, to find and possibly avenge her father, and on the other hand, because she admires Kazumi immensely.
To everyone’s surprise, Noriko becomes the second pilot. Despite all the hostility, she remains steadfast, but her first battle and its loss-filled aftermath take their toll on her spirit. Will Noriko hold out bravely, and will the humans be able to hold their own against the seemingly powerful aliens?
