Synopsis
The Lillian Academy is a Catholic school for girls of high school age. The school uses the so-called “Sœurs system”, where a second or third year student becomes the “Grande Sœur” (“big sister”) to a first year girl, providing her with companionship and guidance; the younger girl is called the “Petite Sœur”. Thanks to the system, less effort is required to enforce compliance with the school rules and the corresponding etiquette.
The Yamayuri Council is the student council of this academy and is divided into three factions, the top members of which are simply referred to as “roses”. In general, the council members enjoy great popularity, and Sachiko Ogasawara, a second-year student, is no exception. One day, when she abruptly fixes Yumi Fukuzuwa’s uniform, who is a year younger than her, the latter is almost embarrassed, even though she actually has a certain weakness for Sachiko. To make matters worse, a photo was taken of the incident, but Yumi can only have it if she gets Sachiko’s permission. But when she tries to get it, Sachiko offers her to become her “Petite Sœur” instead – but for reasons that Yumi doesn’t like at first …
“Maria Watches over Us” tells of how Yumi and Sachiko gradually find their way to each other, and of the experiences of the schoolgirls, especially the council members, and their relationships with each other.
