Synopsis

It is the eighth century AD, and Buddhism is spreading rapidly in Japan, especially among the nobility. One of the young ladies who is particularly fascinated by this new religion is Iratsume. When she falls into a trance one day after copying Buddhist sutras and goes to a remote temple where women are not allowed to enter, she unexpectedly awakens the spirit of the executed Prince Otsu. He recognises a woman from his past in Iratsume, even though she is only an ancestor of his. The beautiful face of this young woman was the last thing the prince saw before he died, and his spirit cannot rest as long as her face haunts his sleep. Thus begins a battle of wills between the kind-hearted Iratsume and the ghost prince, who visits her bedchamber every night, demanding …
