Tief in den sandigen Ebenen des Königreiches Asran reist der japanische Foto-Journalist Makoto Shinjou zum abgelegenen Militärflugplatz »Area 88«, um die Tätigkeiten der Söldner zu dokumentieren. In ihren Reihen befindet sich auch Shin Kazama, ein Pilotenass, der von seinem früheren besten Freund ausgetrickst worden ist, als er einen Vertrag mit Asrans Kampfteam unterzeichnete. Aus diesem Grund verliert er die Chance, als Linienpilot Karriere zu machen und seine Verlobte Ryoko Tsugumo zu heiraten. Nun hat Shin drei Möglichkeiten Area 88 zu verlassen und nach Japan zurückzukehren: der Söldnergruppe für drei Jahre zu dienen, 1,5 Millionen US$ zu verdienen, oder zu desertieren und den drohenden Tod zu riskieren.
