Giovanni’s Island (2014)

“Giovanni’s Island” is set in 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, and follows the experiences of the brothers Junpei and Kanta. The two live with their father and grandfather on the tranquil island of Shikotan, where they rarely notice the war. Their lives are about to change when Soviet troops invade the island and seize the food and housing of the locals. The brothers’ family now has to live in stables and deal with a lack of food.

Since the school is now attended by plenty of Russian children, it doesn’t take long for Junpei to make friends with young Tanya – so much so that he and his brother are even invited to dinner. But that doesn’t change the miserable situation of the original inhabitants, so Hideo, the brothers’ uncle, secretly makes trips to the mainland to acquire food. Kunpei and Kanta’s father, on the other hand, secretly plunders the squatters’ supplies to keep his village from starving. But can this continue to work, or will the family face even darker times?

»Giovannis Insel« spielt im Jahre 1945, kurz vor Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs, und folgt den Erlebnissen der Brüder Junpei und Kanta. Die zwei leben mit ihrem Vater und ihrem Großvater auf der beschaulichen Insel Shikotan und bekommen dort vom Krieg nur selten etwas mit. Ihr aller Leben ändert sich, als Truppen der Sowjetunion die Insel einnehmen und sich Essen und Bleibe der Einheimischen unter den Nagel reißen. Die Familie der Brüder muss nun in Ställen leben und sich mit Nahrungsmangel herumschlagen.

Da die Schule jetzt auch von reichlich russischen Kinder besucht sind, dauert es nicht lange, bis sich Junpei mit der jungen Tanya anfreundet – so sehr, dass er und sein Bruder gar zum Essen eingeladen werden. Das ändert aber nichts an der miserablen Lage der ursprünglichen Einwohner, und so unternimmt Hideo, der Onkel der Brüder, heimlich Reisen zum Festland, um Nahrung zu erwerben. Kunpeis und Kantas Vater hingegen plündert heimlich die Vorräte der Besetzer, um sein Dorf vorm Hunger zu bewahren. Doch kann das weiterhin gut gehen oder muss die Familie womöglich noch dunkleren Zeiten entgegensehen?
