Tanaka ist ein Butler ganz nach alter englischer Schule. Mit der Familie Phantomhive verbindet ihn eine langjährige Geschichte, da er bereits Vincent Phantomhive als Butler gedient hat. Allerdings beendeten die Ereignisse um den gewaltsamen Tod von Earl Phantomhive auch gleichzeitig Tanakas aktive Dienstzeit.

Seitdem befindet sich Tanaka zumeist in einem eher apathischen Zustand, aus dem er selten und nur für kurze Zeit herausfinden kann. Dann jedoch offenbart er einen sehr gewissenhaften und pflichtbewussten Charakter.
