Izayoi ist die menschliche Mutter von Inuyasha. Ihre Liebe zu dem Dämon Inu no Taishou (dt. Herr der Hunde) wäre ihr fast zum Verhängnis geworden, da ihre Liebe nicht akzeptiert wurde und ihre eigene Samurai-Wache ihr nach dem Leben trachtete. Durch das lebenrettende Schwert, Tensaiga, konnte sie aber im letzten Augenblick von Inu no Taishou gerettet werden.

Nach dem Tod von Inu no Taishou ging Izayoi in ein kleines Dorf und zog dort ihren Sohn alleine auf. Sie versuchte stets ihm eine gute und liebende Mutter zu sein, auch wenn sie von allen gemieden und verachtet wurde.
