Ranzou Saotome ist der achtzehnte Souke der Saotome-Familie, die auf eine stolze Tradition von Kabuki-Schauspielern zurückblickt. Daher zählt er zu den bekannteren Persönlichkeiten des Macross-Konvois, zeigt sich aber eher selten in der Öffentlichkeit. Er ist sehr strikt und konservativ und hat sich deswegen mit seinem Sohn Alto Saotome zerstritten, der, obwohl er ein Naturtalent ist, der Bühne den Rücken gekehrt hat.
