Topo erscheint zunächst als gleißende Lichtkugel vor Mai und beschenkt sie mit einem Armband, mit dem sie sich in die begabte Zauberin Magical Emi verwandeln kann. Um stets an ihrer Seite zu sein, nistet sich Topo in einem Stoff-Eichhörnchen ein, das darauf zum Leben erwacht. Fortan hockt er meist auf Mais Schulter oder Kopf, lümmelt aber auch gerne faul in ihrem Zimmer herum.

Als »Fee des Spiegels« reflektiert Topo Mais Träume, und Magical Emi ist demnach Mais Wunschvorstellung. Mit der Zeit setzt sich bei ihr aber die Erkenntnis durch, dass ihr doch sogar noch mehr Freude bereitet, als sie selbst zu zaubern.
