Franz ist ein Neffe von Mr. Bhaer und gleichzeitig der älteste Schüler in Plum Field. Er greift seinem Onkel und Missis Jo oft unter die Arme und arbeitet viel mehr als die anderen Kinder auf den Feldern und bei den Tieren. Da er schon sehr erwachsen ist und sowieso mal studieren will, um wie sein Onkel Lehrer werden zu können, vertritt er diesen wenn nötig in seiner Tätigkeit. Des weiteren spielt er sehr gut Querflöte.
