Nachdem seine Tochter Megumi völlig unerwartet verstorben ist, ist er genauso wie seine Frau Hiroko absolut am Boden zerstört. Selbst der Doktor des idyllischen Dorfes Sotoba, weiß nicht so recht, wie das passieren konnte und ist mindestens genauso fassungslos und geschockt wie die beiden Eltern; nach ihm war es eine simple Blutarmut, die er eigentlich ausreichend versorgt hatte. Doch als Toshio Megumis Vater eine pathologische Autopsie vorschlägt, um Gewissheit zu haben, stößt dieses bei diesem auf heftigen Widerstand, für ihn kommt es auf gar keinen Fall in Frage, dass seine Tochter auf einen Tisch landet und aufgeschnitten wird, sondern einzig eine in dem ländlichen Gebiet typische Erdbestattung.
