Yashima ist wie Konowe als Waisenkind aufgewachsen. In Hanaukyo ist sie die stellvertretende Leiterin der Sicherheitsabteilung, also Konowes Assistentin; in deren Auftrag bemüht sie sich, mehr Disziplin in Tarous Leben zu bringen.
Ihr ungewöhnlicher Name (Sanae ist eigentlich ein Vorname, Yashima eigentlich ein Familienname, was von anderen Charakteren ständig verwechselt und von ihr ständig korrigiert wird) ist ein Running Gag der Serie. Sie hat panische Angst vor Hunden.
Sie vergöttert ihre Vorgesetzte »Konowe-shama« und träumt von innigen Umarmungen zwischen den beiden beim gemeinsamen Bad; ihr privates Zimmer ist mit Bildern und anderen Devotionalien ihres Idols geradezu überfüllt.
