Dragon ist der Anführer einer Revolution gegen die Marine, deren Mitgliederzahl stetig wächst. Aus diesem Grund gilt Dragon als Hauptfeind der Marine, die alles versucht, um ihn endlich zu verhaften. Deswegen ist auf ihn, kurz nach Gol D. Roger, das höchste Kopfgeld jemals ausgesetzt worden.

Dragon trägt anfänglich nur einen langen grünen Umhang mit einer Kapuze, sodass man kaum etwas von seinem Äußeren erkennt – man kann lediglich eine große rote Tätowierung auf seiner linken Gesichtshälfte erblicken, wobei die Bedeutung dieser nicht bekannt ist.

Später stellt sich heraus, dass er mit vollen Namen Monkey D. Dragon heißt und der Vater von Monkey D. Ruffy ist – und damit auch der Sohn von Monkey D. Garp; aus diesem Grund hilft er Ruffy auch bei der Flucht aus Loguetown. Er besitzt ein Äußeres, das ihn wild und unbezähmbar erscheinen lässt. Allerdings ist bisher weder etwas über seine Stärke noch darüber, ob er auch »Teufelskräfte« besitzt, bekannt.
