Yashamaru ist der Zwillingsbruder von Karura und somit der Onkel von Gaara, Kankurou und Temari. Kurz nach Gaaras Geburt starb Karura und seitdem übernahm Yashamaru die Aufgabe für Gaara zu sorgen und ihn zu bewachen, da in diesem der Dämon des Sandes versiegelt worden ist.

Yashamaru ist immer nett und liebevoll zu Gaara, versucht ihm Geborgenheit zu vermitteln und erklärt ihm sogar die Bedeutung des Wortes „Liebe“. Doch tief in seinem Herzen empfindet er jedoch, trotz aller guten Bemühungen, Hass auf Gaara, da er ihn insgeheim für den Tod von Karura verantwortlich macht.
