Mariko ist die von Yousuke so sehnlichst gesuchte junge Frau, die er vor sieben Jahren verließ, als sich ihm die Gelegenheit bot, seinen Lebenstraum zu erfüllen. Genausowenig wie er sie, hat sie den Mann von damals vergessen können und nie aufgehört, nach ihm zu suchen. Als sie ihn dank seines Trompetenspiels in der Fußgängerzone wieder erkennt, verpasst sie ihm allerdings zunächst in aller Öffentlichkeit eine saftige Ohrfeige, wie er einfach gehen konnte, ohne ein Wort zu verlieren.
