Hotaru arbeitet für Masuya Kiemon, in dessen Herberge und Altwarenladen, in Kyoto. Masuya ist in Wirklichkeit ein „Kaisertreuer“, der rebellischen Ronin Unterschlupf bietet und Hotaru dazu zwingt sich bei den Shinsengumi einzuschleichen, um zu spionieren. Da Hotaru sich aber in Okita Souji verliebt hat, fällt ihr diese Aufgabe gleich doppelt schwer.
