Früher arbeitete Rotwang für die Eltern von Barnaby. Nach ihrem Tod griff er ihre Forschungen auf, um so den perfekten Androiden zu entwickeln, was er nun mit der Fertigung von Cis als abgeschlossen betrachtet. Sein Ziel ist nichts geringeres als die Heroes zu ersetzen und noch viel lieber sie alle zu vernichten, was darauf beruht, dass er Next aus tiefstem Herzen hasst und sie als Monster betrachtet. Um sein Ziel zu erreichen, geht er völlig skrupellos vor und es scheint ihm auf diesen Weg nichts heilig zu sein.
