Akira Kyosato ist der zweitgeborene Sohn einer Familie von Samurai und seit kurzem der Verlobte von Tomoe Yukishiro, die er schon seit frühester Kindheit kennt.

Als Liebesbeweis und um sich einen guten Namen als Schwertkämpfer zu machen, verlässt er kurz nach seiner Verlobung seine Heimat Edo und geht nach Kyoto. Dort schließt er sich der Mimawarigumi an, einer Truppe, die für den Shogun kämpft, und wird der Leibwächter von Shigekura.
