Shinsaku Takasugi ist der Gründer und Leiter der Kiheitai, einer Truppe aus Choshu-Ronin, die gegen das Shogunat kämpfen. Unter den Patrioten der Choshu ist Takasugi, neben Katsura Kogoro, die Nummer zwei. Er war es, der als erstes auf die außergewöhnlichen Fähigkeiten von Kenshin aufmerksam wurde, als sich dieser unter den neuen Anwärtern befand und nahm ihn daraufhin bei den Kiheitai auf. Nachdem auch Kogoro auf Kenshin aufmerksam wurde, verkaufte Takasugi Kenshin an Kogoro.

Zusatzinformation:
Shinsaku Takasugi hat wirklich gelebt und seine Ereignisse innerhalb der Bakumatsu-Zeit, abgesehen von der Begegnung mit Kenshin, wurden historischen Überlieferungen nachempfunden.
Die »Kiheitai« entspricht ebenfalls historischen Tatsachen und wurde von Shinsaku Takasugi 1863 gegründet und bestand aus 300-400 Mitgliedern.
