Der machthungrige Lord Cromwell ist der Anführer der Reconquista, die den Umsturz im Königreich Albion auf dem gleichnamigen schwebenden Kontinent planen. Zur Durchsetzung seiner Ziele steht ihm ein machtvoller magischer Gegenstand, der Ring von Andvari, zur Verfügung, der es ihm erlaubt, den Geist anderer Menschen zu kontrollieren, sowie den Toten künstliches Leben einzuhauchen.

Er verbündet sich mit dem tristainischen Verräter Wald und der Diebin Fouquet aka Matilda von Gotha gegen den Herrscher von Albion, Wales. Seine Zauberkraft stammt nicht von ihm selbst, sondern von Sheffield, die ihn als Schachfigur in ihrer eigenen, weitaus umfassenderen Agenda, benutzt. Cromwell, der mittels des magischen Rings, andere manipuliert, ist selbst ironischerweise leicht zu manipulieren, wenn man sich seine Machtgier zunutze macht.
