Gladys ist die Kommandantin der Rebellentruppen, die sich seit zwei Jahren gegen König Hagel stellen, allerdings ohne seither in die Offensive gegangen zu sein. Sie ist eine ehrenvolle und gewissenhafte Anführerin, die Lutes Ernennung zum General aber dennoch als kleine Provokation versteht und sich dieser natürlich annimmt. Allerdings ist er alles andere als das, was sie erwartet hat und seine furchtlose wie auch gewitzte Art weiß ihr zu gefallen, was ihn zu einer Herausforderung macht. Sie ist dennoch von sich überzeugt, die Überlegene zu sein und so stellt sich die Schachmeistern siegessicher gegen ihn in einem Schachduell, welches über die Zukunft der Rebellion oder Lutes Kopf entscheidet.
