Eleanor Campbell ist die jüngste Tochter eines Vicomte (=brit. Adelstitel zwischen Baron und Earl) und stammt somit aus einer adeligen Familie.
Trotz ihres Adelstandes, ist die finanzielle Situation in ihrem Elternhaus nicht die beste, weshalb ihre Mutter versucht sie in die Familie Jones einzuheiraten, die zwar nur zu den Neureichen gehören, dafür aber sehr wohlhabend sind.
Als ihre Mutter Eleanor zu ihren ersten Ball begleitet, lernt sie gleich den ältesten Sohn der Jones, William, kennen und nach ihrem ersten Tanz mit ihm, verliebt sie sich sogar in ihn.

Eleanor ist noch jung und äußerst schüchtern, zurückhaltend und gerät sehr schnell in Verlegenheit. Doch das sind nur die ersten Eindrücke! Wenn man sie etwas näher kennen lernt, entpuppt sie sich als offenes, lebensfrohes und höfliches Mädchen, das viel Wert auf Etikette legt.
