Die Großmutter, bei der Shinra lebte, verstarb vor vier Jahren. Sie glaubte nie daran, dass Shinra Mushis sehen konnte, noch dass es sie überhaupt geben würde. Aufgrund seiner ungewöhnlichen Fähigkeiten hat sie ihm verboten das Haus zu verlassen, damit niemals jemand diese zu Gesicht bekommen würde. Da dieses Phänomen nur bei Shinras linker Hand auftritt, verband sie diese mit einem Wollverband und drängte ihn dazu mit rechts schreiben zu lernen (er ist normalerweise Linkshänder).
