Der junge Prinz Erik der Artos-Dynastie weilte als Kind oft im benachbarten Königreich Brinkhofen, wobei er viel Zeit mit der dortigen gleichaltrigen Prinzessin Lotte verbrachte. Die beiden gaben sich ein Versprechen, später einmal zu heiraten. Nun sind beide erwachsen, doch das Blatt hat sich gewendet, denn zwischen den Königreichen sind Spannungen ausgebrochen. Der Prinz ist hin und her gerissen zwischen seinen Pflichten als Thronfolger und militärischer Führer auf der einen und seinen Gefühlen für Lotte auf der anderen Seite. Gegen den Widerstand seines Vaters holt er Lotte an den Hof, was aber dazu führt, dass sie gefangen genommen wird - außerdem macht sein Vater ihm klar, dass die rebellische Lotte nicht den Ansprüchen genüge, die eine Ehefrau zu erfüllen habe. So beginnt Erik mit Hilfe von Kira ein spezielles Training für Lotte, um sie aus der politischen Schusslinie zu nehmen...
