Bernard Schatellier ist ein Gerichtsschreiber in Paris. Durch Zufall beobachtet er den Unfall zwischen der Adeligen, Madame de Polignac und der Mutter von Rosalie und ist völlig entsetzt, als sich die Adelige ohne zu Helfen, hochnäsig aus dem Staub macht. Bernard war noch nie gut auf Adelige zu sprechen, doch dieses Ereignis führt unter anderem dazu, dass er sich Maximilien de Robespierre anschließt und zu einem Revolutionär wird, in der Hoffnung die Gerechtigkeit für das Volk zu gewinnen.
