Sakura war bisher ein ganz normales 10-jähriges Mädchen, die sich mit den täglichen Problemen eines Schulkindes rumschlagen muss. Ihre beste Freundin Tomoyo hilft ihr dabei diese zu bewältigen.
Eines Tages findet sie im Keller ihrer Vaters ein seltsames Buch. Sie öffnet dieses und alle enthaltenen Zauberkarten verschwinden in alle Himmelsrichtungen. Der Wächter des Buches, Kerberos, übergibt ihr die Aufgabe, alle sogenannten Clowcards wieder zu finden...

Sakura hat einen älteren Bruder namens Toya. Außerdem ist sie in dessen besten Freund Yukito verliebt und nutzt jede Möglichkeit ihm nah zu sein.

Den frühen Tod ihrer Mutter hatte sie nicht richtig mitbekommen, da sie erst 3 Jahre alt war. Trotzdem denkt sie oft an sie und weiß, dass sie immer auf Sakura aufpassen wird.
