Die einen bezeichnen es als Fluch, die anderen als Segen, dass Smollett der Kapitän der Hispaniola ist. Er ist ein sehr erfahrener Seemann, der schon sehr oft die Meere befahren hat. Die Erfahrung von ihm ist auf der Reise zur Schatzinsel daher Gold wert, doch ist er auch zugleich ein sehr strikter Mann. Bei ihm gelten eiserne Regeln, an die sich auch alle Insassen zu halten haben. Es darf beispielsweise kein Alkohol getrunken werden, wofür er auch keine Ausnahme macht. Diese Striktheit muss er aber einfach haben, denn nur dadurch schafft er es, auch wirklich von den anderen Leuten respektiert zu werden. Der Mann, der sich sehr gut als Kopf einer Gruppe eignet, ist auch ein großer Patriot, der mit Stolz die britische Flagge an seinem Mast hängen hat.
