Gobo ist eine in die Jahre gekommene Frau im Königreich Ho, Provinz Kei und lebt im Rike, eine Einrichtung für Waisenkinder.
Sie hasste den alten König Ho und war überglücklich, als dieser endlich vom Thron gestoßen wurde. Kurz nach der Entmachtung des Königs, kommt ein neues Mädchen in den Rike, welches als Gyokuyo vorgestellt wird. Gobo hegt gleich die Vermutung, das es sich dabei um die Tochter des König Ho handeln könnte. Mithilfe eines Tricks, indem Gobo ihr Hilfe anbietet aus dieser armseligen Umgebung herauszukommen, bringt sie den Neuling dazu ihr Geheimnis preiszugeben.
Fortan stellt sich Gobo als kaltherzige Frau heraus, die dem Mädchen an allem die Schuld gibt und ihr mit Freude haufenweise Arbeit auferlegt.
