Pupa ist ein Virus, der sich in der Form eines roten Schmetterlings zeigt, welcher sich dann einen Wirt (egal ob Mensch oder Tier) sucht. Dieser wird dann vom Pupa Virus befallen und verwandelt sich so zunehmends in ein großes rotes mit Flügel besetztes Monster, das sich von rohem Fleisch ernährt und zudem unmenschliche Stärke und Heilungskräfte besitzt. Jedoch ist es bei Pupa so, dass nicht alle Befallenen in gleicher Weise mutieren. Wie bei Yume und Utsutsu erkennbar ist, variiert je nach befallenem Wirt die Mutation. Yume verwandelt sich in ein Monster, das Fleisch braucht, Utsutsu jedoch bleibt mehr oder weniger menschlich, erhält jedoch übermenschliche Heilkräfte.
