Hiroto Nanbu, Codename „Avenger“, ist einer der Spezialagenten, die die vier mythischen Priesterinnen schützen sollen, die das Siegel von Magatsugami bewahren. Er hat einen Dämonen mit gefährlichem Eigenleben in sich, der mit ihm um die Kontrolle über seinen Körper ringt, ihm aber auch übermenschliche Kräfte und magische Fähigkeiten verleiht. Angriffe gegen ihn können ihn nur unter außergewöhnlichen Umständen überhaupt verletzen, da seine Magie ein starkes Schutzfeld um ihn herum aufbaut. Wenn er doch einmal eine Verwundung erleidet, ist es für ihn problematisch diese wieder zu heilen, denn auf konventionellem Weg ist das nicht möglich, da Hiroto praktisch untot ist und bereits mehrere Hunderte Jahre alt.

Seine Aufgabe führt ihn zu der Oberschülerin Homura Kamishiro, in der die Kraft von Hinomiko schlummert. Seine wortkarge und kühle Art trägt jedoch nicht dazu bei, ihr Vertrauen zu gewinnen. Hiroto merkt man an, dass er den Umgang mit normalen Menschen schon lange nicht mehr pflegt, sondern zu einem stoischen Einzelgänger geworden ist, der mit leidenschaftsloser Effizienz seine Aufträge erledigt. Durch diese nüchterne Art wirkt er auch oft unsensibel, besonders wenn es um intime Details geht.
