Subaru ist nach eigenen Angaben Student an der Toto-Universität. Er taucht das erste Mal als Tatverdächtiger auf, der angeblich ein Brandstifter ist. Da sein Haus nicht mehr bewohnbar ist, zieht er ins Haus von Shinichi, wo er noch heute lebt.

Subaru besitzt die Aura der Schwarzen Organisation, da Ai dies spürte. Außerdem ist er gut im Nahkampf und weiß sich zu wehren, was er aber nur im Notfall macht. Nach Angaben von Agasa ist er ein exzellenter Koch, da beide gerne zusammen kochen.

Im Verlauf der Serie erfährt er von Shinichis Geheimnis und weiß nun auch, dass Conan in Wahrheit Shinichi ist.
