Marilla hatte die Idee, einen Jungen zu adoptieren, der sie und ihren Bruder bei der Arbeit unterstützten sollte. Als Matthew vom Bahnhof mit Anne zurück kommt, bekommt sie einen Schreck und will dieses Kind zunächst auf keinen Fall behalten. Da Matthew sie aber schon ins Herz geschlossen hatte, entscheidet sie sich, Anne zu behalten. Sie wirkt anfangs recht kühl und reserviert, entwickelt aber später eine innige Beziehung zu Anne.
