Azumi Yamada ist eine kleine, unschuldige, sechszehnjährige Oberschülerin mit durchschnittlichem Aussehen, die seit ihre Familie von Kyuushuu wegzog in einem Gebäudekomplex in Tokio lebt. Im Aufzug ihres neuen Wohnhauses begegnet ihr Chizuru Yoshida, die, wie sich am folgenden Tag, herausstellt, eine ihrer Klassenkameradinnen an ihrer neuen Schule ist. Da Chizuru eine ihrer Mitschülerinnen ist, versucht Azumi zunächst freundlich auf sie zuzugehen und mit ihr in Kontakt zu treten, stößt bei ihr damit aber nur auf harsche Ablehnung. Trotz der harten Zurückweisung ändert sich Chizurus Verhalten gegenüber Azumi jedoch schnell, als sie aufhört, ihre Gefühle für sie zu leugnen und sie versucht, sich auf völlig unangemessene Weise mit Azumi anzufreunden, was ihr auch widererwarten tatsächlich gelingt, obwohl Azumi befürchtet, dass sie durch diese ungewöhnliche Freundschaft in ernsthafte Schwierigkeiten verwickelt werden könnte. Azumi will Drehbuchautorin werden und tritt dem „Drama“-Club bei, wo sie ihren Mitschüler Ryuuichi Kobayashi, der Amateurfilme dreht, kennenlernt und sich mit ihm anfreundet, was Chizuru, die fest entschlossen ist, Azumi für sich zu gewinnen, unterdessen gar nicht gefällt …
