John ist Medizinstudent an der Universität London und besuchte dort mit seinem Kindheitsfreund Friday dieselbe Klasse. An Nachmittagen spielten sie oft Schach, wobei John stets den Kürzeren zog. Außerdem forschten die beiden im Geheimen an der Leichentechnologie, obwohl dies nach dem Gesetz streng verboten ist.

Nach dem Tod seines Freundes ist er fest entschlossen, dessen Seele zurückzuholen und so auch seine Hypothesen zu beweisen.

Anmerkung:
Inspiriert wurde der Charakter von Dr. John H. Watson, der in Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Kriminalromanen einen engen Freund des Detektivs Sherlock Holmes verkörpert.
