Hadaly arbeitet als Privatsekretärin für den amerikanischen Premierminister Grant und begleitet ihn nach Bombay, wo sie erstmals auf John aufmerksam wird.

Als ihr Vater ist Thomas Edison im Grunde vielmehr ihr Schöpfer, denn Hadaly ist in Wirklichkeit eine Androidin, die in ihrer Perfektion nicht vom einem echten Menschen zu unterscheiden ist. Dennoch sehnt sie sich nach einer Seele, um Freude und Schmerz empfinden zu können.
