Suzu Urano ist ein gut erzogenes, junges und verträumtes Mädchen, das mit ihrer Familie in Hiroshima wohnt und aufwächst. Anfangs führte ihre Familie ein glückliches Leben und sie ernähren sich durch das Geschäft mit Algen. Sie geht immer sehr verträumt durch das Leben und zeichnet gerne, oftmals erzählt sie auch ihrer Schwester Sumi ausgedachte Geschichten. Jedoch kommt auch der Zweite Weltkrieg näher und die Situation verschlechtert sich. Im Alter von 19 Jahren wird sie verheiratet und zieht nach Kure in das Haus der Houjou-Familie, das Haus ihres Ehemannes Shuusaku. Auch wenn sie nicht die beste Hausfrau ist, bemüht sie sich trotzdem, den Alltag der Familie zu erleichtern. Die Familie ihres Bräutigams und sie versuchen die schwere Zeit des Krieges zu überstehen, jedoch bleiben auch sie von Tragödien nicht verschont.
