Gansaku Nanbu fungiert innerhalb der Serie als Boxtrainer von Joe. Früher war er selber Boxer sowie Underground-Boxtrainer, der Geld kassierte, indem er seine Schützlinge geplant verlieren ließ. Nachdem er diese Masche auch mit Joe weiterführen wollte, dieser sich jedoch gegen seinen Trainer stellte und ungeplant einen Sieg einfuhr, der Gansaku viele Schulden bei Fujimaki aufs Auge drückte, entschied dieser sich, eine ehrliche Haut zu werden und mit Joe gemeinsam am großen Boxturnier Megalonia teilzunehmen.
