Ryoko ist die gefürchtetste Piratin des (Tenchi Muyo!) Universums und steht ganz oben auf der Liste der gesuchten Verbrecher. Physisch ist sie gerademal frische 17, in Wirklichkeit aber schon über 5.000 Jahre alt und besitzt Superkräfte. Ihre Mutter, im Sinne von Erschafferin, ist die Wissenschaftlerin Washu Hakubi.

Ihrem furchteinflössenden Ruf wird Ryoko jedoch nur wenig gerecht. Trotz ihrer rauen und konfliktfreudigen Art, sowie ihres meist rüpelhaften und ungehobelten Auftretens, trägt sie doch ganz normale Träume und Wünsche in sich und sehnt sich immens nach Zuneigung und Geborgenheit. Objekt ihrer ungeteilten und oft aufopferungsvollen Hingabe ist Tenchi Masaki.
