Hotaru taucht das erste mal in Staffel 3 auf. Sie umgibt das größte Geheimnis im Sailor Universum: sie ist Sailor Saturn und gilt als die mächtigste aber auch gefährlichste aller Sailor-Kriegerinnen. Sailor Saturn wird auch die »Kriegerin der Zerstörung« genannt. Über Sailor Saturn scheinen aber nur Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptun und Sailor Pluto Bescheid zu wissen und wollen sie um jeden Preis stoppen. Seit einem Unfall im Labor von Hotarus Vaters, muss sowohl der Körper ihres Vaters, als auch ihr eigener Körper als Behälter für Dämonen herhalten. In Hotaru schlummern somit 3 Seelen: ihre Eigene, die von Sailor Saturn und die von Mistress 9, der Dämonen-Anführerin.

Hotaru ist als Mensch eher eine zurückhaltende Person, die sich eher im Hintergrund hält. Sie hat außerdem noch die Gabe, menschliche Wunden und Verletzungen zu heilen. Auf diese Weise lernen sich Chibiusa und Hotaru kennen und die beiden freunden sich sehr miteinander an, was für beide große Konsequenzen nach sich zieht.
