Kanako Oono, die seit der 3. Klasse in den USA aufgewachsen ist, tritt Genshiken zum Wintersemester bei. Normalerweise eher ruhig, kann sie jedoch sehr rigoros, bis geradezu gewalttätig werden, wenn es um ihr Hobby - Cosplay - geht. Sie liebt Cosplay, aber ihr ist Authentizität wichtig, sprich, man muss sich schon mit dem Charakter durchweg identifizieren, den man darstellt. Immer wieder versucht sie, teils erfolgreich, Saki zum Cosplay zu überreden. In ihren Kostümen posierend hilft Kanako immer wieder, Genshiken bekannter zu machen.

Eine weitere Vorliebe Oonos, der ursprüngliche Grund Genshiken beizutreten, sind Yaoi-Manga mit älteren Herren mit Glatze.

Dank des gemeinsamen Hobbys Cosplay stehen sich Kanako und Tanaka sehr nahe.
