Fred Porlock ist William James Moriarty bei seiner Tätigkeit als Verbrechensberater behilflich. Er gilt als der beste Informationsvermittler Englands. Im Fall des ermordeten Adeligen Enoch J. Drebber verkleidete er sich als alte Frau, um einen Ring, der am Tatort verloren ging, wiederzubeschaffen. Er verspürt einen ähnlichen Drang wie William, die gesellschaftlichen Strukturen Englands zu ändern. Die Rettung von Menschen ist ihm aber genauso wichtig. Er brachte es beispielsweise nicht übers Herz, die Kinder, die Moires Baskerville wie wilde Tiere jagte, ihrem Schicksal zu überlassen.
