Description

Anime on Demand, or AoD for short, was a German streaming portal. When it was launched in 2007, it was the first legal German-language portal that made it possible to download DRM-protected anime for a fee, both as a rental and as a purchase. A year later, the subscription pool was launched with initially fixed terms of 3, 6 or 12 months, with episodes regularly being removed from the pool and replaced by new ones. Anime on Demand GmbH, originally created by AV Visionen to develop its digital business, was integrated into it in 2009, while AV Visionen itself became part of Viz Media Europe. Since its launch, the streaming portal has worked closely with the label Anime Virtual (later Kazé Deutschland) from the same group of companies.

At the end of 2012, AoD revised its web portal and from then on also offered its catalogue as streams. The offer included in the subscription model was also expanded. The first episode of many anime series was now offered free of charge for registered users.

At the beginning of 2014, the portal launched its first simulcast offers in order to offer current anime from Japan with German subtitles in Germany. The first offerings included the series “Hamatora”, “Space Dandy” and “Nisekoi”. The previous download option was abolished on the 1st May 2014. In October 2014, the portal underwent a comprehensive relaunch and a revision of the subscription model: a standard subscription with all anime published for at least 6 months and a premium subscription that also includes all new releases and simulcasts.

In summer 2016, they established a uniform subscription for everything, based on the price of the cheaper standard subscription. The Anime on Demand offer was available in the German-speaking countries of Germany, Switzerland and Austria and, in addition to titles from the main partner Kazé, also includes titles from Nipponart, Anime House, AniMoon, Filmconfect and individual exclusive titles.

The streaming service was closed on the 8th December 2021.
