Nach seiner Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis sucht Yotaro den Rakugo-Künstler Yakumo auf, um sein Lehrling zu werden. Trotz anfänglichen Widerstands wird ihm sein Wunsch schließlich gewährt, doch noch bevor Yotaros eigene Rakugo-Karriere losgehen kann, wird erst einmal die Lebensgeschichte seines neuen Meisters erzählt und wie dieser im Nachkriegsjapan als Rakugo-Lehrling selbst erst durch freundschaftliche Rivalität zu Sukeroku und unter persönlichen Opfern zu den wahren Freuden dieser Kunst fand.
