Zouroku, ein gewöhnlicher Landsmann, lebt zusammen mit seinen Eltern und seiner Schwester. Eines Tages befällt ihn eine seltsame Krankheit und sein ganzer Körper weist regenbogen-farbige Flecken auf. Am Ende kommt er zu dem Schluss seine Stadt zu verlassen und allein im Wald zu leben.

In der Erstveröffentlichung beinhaltete dieser Band neben der titelgebenden Geschichte, die im April 1970 erstmals im Magazin Shounen Gahou veröffentlicht wurde, noch vier weitere Kapitel namens Mizu no Naka, Hatsuka Nezumi, Hyakkanme und Satsuhito. Einer Neuauflage von 1976, welche offenbar auch Grundlage für die spanische Ausgabe war, fehlt das letzte der genannten Kapitel. In späteren Veröffentlichungen wurden oftmals weitere Kapitel hinzugefügt und wieder entfernt, sodass heute eine Vielzahl von Bänden unter demselben Titel existiert, deren Inhalt sich jedoch bis auf die Hauptgeschichte unterscheidet. Das titelgebende Kapitel war zudem Teil des 2006 veröffentlichten englischsprachigen Sammelbandes Lullabies from Hell.

Hace mucho tiempo, en un recóndito páramo del país de Saru había una balsa a la que se dirigían todos los animales moribundos. La gente de los alrededores la llamaba la Charca del Sueño y ninguno se atrevía a acercarse.
En la aldea junto a la charca vivía Zoroku, un campesino que nunca había sido muy listo. Un día, a Zoroku, siempre dibujando o perdido en sus pensamientos, le salieron en la cara pústulas con los siete colores del arco iris.
